Life's a journey not a race

Comparing yourself to others is a natural part of human nature. Something we subconsciously do even when we know we shouldn't. I am now in my mid-twenties (eh sounds so old!) and everyday I find myself thinking about where I am in life and how that relates to where everyone else my age is in life, as if it's some kind of race.

When I see my old class mates working their dream jobs, climbing their career ladders, living in fancy apartments decked out with Urban Outfitter cushions, getting engaged in Bali to their true love, I can't help but think 'why amn't I doing that?' and 'why is my life such a shit show in comparison?' I have come to realise that these are such unhealthy thoughts and I should not be thinking this way so I am making a conscious effort to not compare my life to others anymore.

I figured the first thing I needed to do was stop exposing myself to the lives of people who I once knew and actually don't really give a rats ass about. I mean, I never talk to these people, so why do I care about what they're doing?! So you guessed it, I deleted my Facebook. It's been like a week now and I am loving not having other peoples lives shoved in my face, I can just focus entirely on my own life.
Life is not a competition. Each one is on their own journey. Live according to your choices, capacity, values and principles.
The second thing I needed to do was remind myself that we are all on our own personal journeys and none of them will ever be the same. Everyone does not have the same timescale of when things happen in their lives. I may not have my dream job now or be able to travel the world but that doesn't mean I won't one day, or maybe I actually don't want to travel the world, because I don't want the same things as Anna from my science class and I am just making myself believe that I do.

We are all unique with unique thoughts, struggles, worries, flaws, morals, and life experiences. We all have different things that hold us back or give us strength, we cope with situations in our own ways and learn life lessons at different points.  Therefore, it only make sense that our life stories and journeys would all be unique.

So here's to living life the best way you can, on your own terms without worrying about what anyone else may be doing.
